Design Approach

Throughout my career I have used various design methodologies, workflows and team structures, and the one thing they all have in common is change. So instead of sharing my opinions on today’s best practices, here are a few principles I bring with me to every team.

01

Embrace Ambiguity

The gray areas of a product are exactly where a strong design team can shine. Working with leadership to give designers a little guidance and a lot of space to explore can lead to impactful results that surprise and delight stakeholders.

02

Simplify

Although simplification is far from a novel idea, it is a persistent challenge. As the complexity of a product increases, the more important it becomes to simplify interfaces into clear, concise messaging and calls to action.

03

Just Ask

A quick intervention to ask for feedback from users can be faster and more valuable than a series of A/B or multivariate testing. Involving the people who use your product in the design process also builds trust and brand loyalty.

04

Think Outside the Screen

Interaction with technology has expanded far beyond reading, typing, clicking or swiping. Fully utilizing the capabilities we currently have to interface with a product is a great path to creating what's next.

05

Design Everything

Encouraging colleagues to make a fun habit out of design helps keep work feeling more like play. Whether it is designing the experience for a family vacation, branding a dinner night with friends, or reimagining an existing product, each design challenge makes the next one easier.
