CognitiveScale

My time as Creative Director at CognitiveScale was a fast-paced series of zero-to-one projects using machine learning that focused on generating meaningful insights from previously inaccessible data. In addition to working with an entirely new technology, the role encompassed the introduction of version control for design files, early notions of design systems and my first experience leading a large team that was also split between in-house and off-shore designers. In these early days of the company our goal was to partner with fortune 500’s to explore the possibilities of what AI could become and to generate enough investment capital to expand the technology.

Big Data, Dark Data

and Disney

Exploring early Artificial Intelligence with Disney, Deloitte contracted with us to build an intelligent, multi-faceted app that could leverage complex relationships between consumers, content, and commerce. Our goal with the prototype was to prove out the power of graph databases and machine learning in a practical application meant to help kids find more relevant through their tweens, teens and early adulthood. Since nothing like this existed at the time, it was easy to take a step back and Think Outside the Screen, but not quite so easy to Simplify.

Design Decisions

Visualizing the graph.

We chose to use the structure of the graph database as core visual element that put the user at the center of their constellation of connections. It also allowed us to explain the technology to stakeholders in one impactful interface.

Democratizing the training process.

We didn’t have the time or staff to train models for every client so we designed training into the product. Users had the ability to rate every insight or recommendation, simultaneously improving the AI and personalizing their connections.

Connections to real life.

Disney was specifically interested in using AI to ingest content, find similarities, and recommend similar, progressively more mature content. We added shopping and social aspects to showcase the full potential of AI and drive stronger connections to the content through personal style and real world friendships.

Outcomes

We were awarded multiple design patents for the user feedback interfaces adding to the startup’s valuation and credibility.

Only a prototype, Disney Connections was never launched, but led to significant investments from both Disney and Deloitte.
